Overview of the Income Tax Program:
The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is a program that allows people with lower incomes to receive help with filing their taxes. Since most students fit into the low income category by virtue of being a full-time student, we offer this FREE service on campus to our members.
The Role of the Canada Revenue Agency:
The role of the Canada Revenue Agency is to provide training to community organizations that want to offer FREE income tax services. For those participating in the U.T.S.U. program, the CRA provides on-line training and on-going support to our volunteer team.
The Volunteer Role:
The volunteer works with you to help file your SIMPLE taxes. They are trained to assist with simple taxes and navigate the tax software that has been provided.
Please be advised that volunteers do not prepare returns for deceased persons, bankrupt individuals or clients who have capital gains/losses, employment expenses, business or rental income or expenses.
We cannot assist anyone with income in box 048 of a T4A (unless it is under $1000. it is considered business income) or an NR4 form.
Please be advised that the onus is on you, the individual client, to check your tax return over before the volunteer submits it electronically. The onus is on you, the client, to make sure that you have all of your tax documentation with you when you leave the appointment.
